DIY Mason Jar Chalk Craft

DIY Mason Jar Chalk Craft:

Kids are so creative. My kids have been making these DIY Mason Jar Chalk Craft decorations. The have been having so much fun creating these jars and I love their creativity. I enjoy seeing them outside working on a project of on their own volition. The jars are so pretty when they are done and the kids get the fun of picking the layers of colors. I love to see them do a kids craft even if they destroy a whole box of chalk making this one, it’s worth it to get them being creative and using their hands.

My boys coined this chalk dust “Super Hero Dust” because if you scoop up a handful and blow it, it flies away like a super hero. Very messy, but they love it! Just one piece of advice, stand way back and out of the wind when they make it fly! This mama prefers the “Super Hero Dust” inside the jar rather than flying around;)

Gather the Supplies:

To make this DIY Mason Jar Chalk Craft gather the following supplies:

  • Various colors of pieces of large chalk sticks
  • Mason jar with lid
  • Rubber Mallet
  • Paper towel sheet
  • Rocks

The next step involves simply rolling the paper towel over the chalk and placing the rocks on the sides to hold it down. The fun part is next as the kids can crush the chalk with the rubber mallet. My boys and their friends love this destructive part because they get to smash something.

Smash it!

This should be done outside as the chalk dust flies everywhere. It makes a pretty mess though! The kids can smash away until the chalk is completely pulverized. The next step involves carefully picking up the paper towel and folding it into a funnel to pour the chalk dust into the mason jar. The fun part is picking out the colors to make different combinations of colored layers. The lid can be secured on top once the jar is full and the child has created a beautiful decoration for their room or anywhere in the house. Do shake or the color layers will mix.

With this craft the kids will have so much fun and they will use up all the chalk so add chalk to your shopping list to replace it. The great part about this craft is the kids can pick the size of the mason jar to make a larger one or a small one. The mason jar makes for a nice decorative piece but any jar could be used such as a spaghetti sauce jar or small baby food jar. This craft would also make a great Christmas or birthday gift from the kids to parents or grandparents.

Top the jar with a mason jar lid or Press’n Seal.
