Do you love summer? I certainly do. And, I love a sweet treat or drink to enjoy it even more. The sweetness of snow cones makes me think of summer, not that people can’t have them other times of the year. My boys would eat snow cones any time of the year. all year. We also love root beer floats, so I combined the ideas and added toppings to make a self-serve bar. The Root Beer Float Snow Cone Bar was a huge hit with my family. The kids had so much fun making different snow cones with all the toppings in our little poolside DIY snow cone bar.

This is great for a family time treat or at parties.
How to Make a Root Beer Float Snow Cone
The Root Beer Float Snow Cone is made with two scoops of shaved ice, then fill the cup with root beer (leave room for half and half). Next, add 1/2 to 1 Tablespoon half and half poured over the ice. Add these ingredients per snow cone, then add a maraschino cherry on top. It tastes just like a root beer float! My favorite is drizzling a bit of the butterscotch syrup on the root beer float snow cone. Root Beer and butterscotch taste yummy together:)
Snow Cone Machine to Make Homemade Snow Cones
We bought our @Waring Pro Snow Cone Maker a few years ago for our son’s party. I looked into renting a snow cone machine, but I found buying one rather than renting one was cheaper. Plus when buying it, we could keep the snow cone maker for future snow cones for our family and at parties. It has been a great purchase we’ve used it many times for family treats or at party. I’m very happy with it. I use regular ice from our ice machine in our fridge or purchase a bag of ice. Perfect for picnics and pool parties!
Waring SCM100FR Snow Cone Maker
The machine comes with four reusable plastic cones that can be washed, but if having a big party, buy paper cups like these show below. We love the straws with the little scoop spoon at the end!
200 Snow Cone Cups 6 Oz and 200 Spoon Straws
There are many snow cone syrups on the market. Buy them singly or in packs of different sizes, below is the brand we’ve tried and liked. I have also bought snow cone syrup at Walmart, Target, and Michael’s.

Root Beer Float Snow Cone Bar
Suggestions for toppings for the Snow Cone Bar:
- chocolate syrup
- butterscotch syrup
- root beer
- assorted snow cone flavored syrups
- half and half creamer
- sprinkles
- shaved chocolate pieces
- marshmallows
- maraschino cherries
- FOR ADULTS ONLY: butterscotch schnapps
Variations on the Snow Cones
In addition to the root beer float snow cones, my boys also made other types of snow cones with the snow cone syrups and no root beer. They were able to customize their snow cones to their tastes, and they had a blast!
This is a perfect treat for birthday parties, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Fourth of July, picnics, potlucks, or any day. Just be sure to buy extra ice as this will be a favorite! We keep our ice in an ice bucket next to the snow cone machine so people can come to the snow cone bar, shave some ice, and then add their toppings. Or, plop an extra bag in a cooler just to make snow cones!
I hope you enjoy this fun version of a root beer float, we certainly do! So simple, so delicious!
