Banana bread is a favorite at my house; my kids are always begging for me to make it. So, I’m frequently grabbing for my mom’s banana bread recipe when we have ripe bananas. I love my mom’s recipe, it’s a classic. However, I always like to mess with recipes and come up with my own. I wanted to create a healthier banana bread recipe so I played in the kitchen (my fave) and came up with a whole wheat banana bread. I’ve created a yummy bread I know you’ll love. This Healthier Moist Whole Wheat Banana Bread Recipe is super easy to make, plus it’s so moist right out of the oven, it doesn’t even need butter:)

This whole wheat banana bread recipe uses 100% whole grain whole wheat flour so it’s a healthy banana bread. It also uses half the granulated sugar of my mom’s classic banana bread recipe. The sweetness is still in the recipe, however, because apple juice and ripe bananas are used in the recipe. The bananas and the apple juice make the tasty breakfast bread moist and full of flavor. It’s perfect for breakfast with coffee, in the afternoon with tea, or as a snack with a glass of milk. It works as a healthy dessert too.

We Love this Healthier Moist Whole Wheat Banana Bread Recipe
I switched to this recipe, and my family didn’t even notice (sorry guys, I threw a healthier recipe at ya in secret). This was my true taste test. I didn’t tell anyone in my family that I switched the recipe, yet they all loved it! They didn’t even notice that I had switched out white flour for 100% whole grain whole wheat flour. Plus, I reduced the granulated sugar without anyone even noticing using 2 1/2 cups mashed banana and apple juice. Even my pickiest son loves this recipe! So, it’s clearly kid-friendly.
Using less granulated sugar, that’s a giant win:) I didn’t eliminate the sugar completely, but the amount is cut in half from other classic banana bread recipes that call for 1 full cup of sugar. However, I’m not the sugar police and I do use it in my cooking and baking, but if I can reduce it without sacrificing flavor, I’m ecstatic!
I’m all in for this tasty, healthier, whole wheat banana bread recipe!
The Ingredients for this Healthier Moist Whole Wheat Banana Bread
The nine ingredients for this moist whole wheat banana bread include the following ingredients:
- mashed ripe bananas
- 100% whole grain whole wheat flour
- baking soda
- butter
- sugar
- salt
- eggs–I love using eggs from humane-certified farms that provide free-range natural environments for chickens!
- skim milk
- apple juice
Bake at 350° for 55-60 minutes. Assess for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center of the loaf, it is done when it comes out clean. Find that sweet spot for the baking time that works for your oven:) All ovens cook differently, which always amazes me. I have a double oven and the smaller one cooks much faster than the larger one even at the same temperture. So, I always have to plan and pay attention to how long I set my timer for when baking and cooking in each oven.
Breakfast Bread
When we have banana bread in the house, it is the go to pick for my youngest son for breakfast. He loves it as a breakfast bread, but also as a snack. Try out this whole wheat banana bread recipe at your house for breakfast and see if your family notices it’s not made with white flour.
I usually butter the bread slices for my kids, but it doesn’t really need butter because it is so moist.
Baking with Whole Wheat Flour is Healthy and it can be Delicious!
I love to eat healthy, but I always don’t want to sacrifice taste for health. I still love good food!
I love that this whole wheat banana bread is loaded with the healthy ingredients of bananas and 100% Whole grain whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour has often been tough for me to work with in the kitchen because it tends to make the bread more dry, but not in this recipe with all the fruit and apple juice, it ends up being a very moist bread. I love baking with whole wheat flour because of the added benefits of consuming a whole grain food ingredient.
I recently made another recipe with whole wheat flour, Chocolate Raspberry Muffins Made with Whole Wheat Flour. It is so delicious and I love the raspberry glaze. I used frozen raspberries. So yum!
I use this flour.

Gosh! That looks delicious. Can I ask the role of Apple juice? I am not a baker but trying to bake some heathy sugar free alternatives and trying to learn at the same time 🙂

The apple juice adds sweetness and moisture. Whole wheat flour can often make a bread turn out more dry, so moisture is needed to keep it from being too dry. Thanks!
Well I too am a lover of banana bread! I actually have a bunch of bananas being stored in my freezer I should make a vegan version of your recipe! Since I don’t eat dairy or eggs!
