I love making my own lotion. Making a DIY lotion is fabulous because it’s all-natural, non-toxic, and without chemicals or other unhealthy additives. This lotion recipe is ideal for moisturizing both skin and hair. It’s very easy to make and the cool thing about it is … it’s cool! That’s because you store it in the refrigerator. It smells so lovely and it a great cooling treat for the skin so it’s ideal for summer (or any time of year of course).

Lavender DIY Lotion for Moisturizing Skin and Hair Homemade lotion

This DIY Lotion recipe is so easy to make. It uses natural ingredients. The homemade lotion is stored in the refrigerator to keep it solid. If you store it out of the refrigerator it will melt. I love keeping it in the fridge because it’s a nice treat to cool my skin in the summer. I love how exhilarating and invigorating it feels as I smooth it on my skin.

Great for Skin and Hair

It melts quickly into the skin as you spread a chunk around. My skin feels awesome when I spread on, very luxurious, and filled with an amazing aroma. I have not put this lotion on my face yet because I use other essential oils for my face, but I’ve used it all over the rest of my skin and really enjoy both the feel of it on my skin and the aroma. Since using homemade coconut oil-based lotions my skin doesn’t crack, get tight, or hurt in the winter anymore. The skin on my hands used to crack and bleed every winter for years. I tried every lotion on the market and only found some luck with Eucerin. But now, I use my homemade essential oil lotions with coconut oil and my skin is so healthy, strong, and supple, even in the winter.

It’s also great for moisturizing and calming frizzy hair too. I love to add it to my hair in the morning if I don’t plan to wash my hair until later in the day because it not only moisturizes my hair and makes it smell amazing, it calms my frizzy hair. I have naturally curly hair and in the mornings it can be all crazy from being slept on, so this is a perfect solution to get my hair under control and looking nice, especially if I don’t plan on washing it until later in the day. It actually helps redefine my curls as I scrunch it and work it into my hair. Plus, it adds a nice shine to my hair. I love it!

Ingredients needed for this DIY Lotion

The ingredients needed are easily found at a grocery store or store like Walmart or Target that sells personal supplies. Two essential oils are also needed. Essential oils can easily be ordered online. I use Simply Earth essential oils and I love them so much that I’ve become an affiliate for them. If you’d like to check out their oils, visit them at Simply Earth and use my code JULIEHOAGWRITERFREE for a free starter box. I fully recommend their oils … love them!

The four ingredients needed are:

  • 1/2 cup solid refined organic coconut oil, expeller pressed with neutral flavor and aroma
  • 1 Tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 25 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops clary sage essential oil

Directions for Making Lavender DIY Lotion

This homemade lotion is very easy to make. You will need a hand blender, a 4-6 ounce jar, spoons, 2 bowls, measuring cups/spoons, and the refrigerator. I used a four-ounce jar and after pouring it into the jar, a little bit was left in the bowl, but I just put that extra amount on my skin to use it up.

  1. First, melt the 1/2 cup of solid coconut oil in a double boiler. Or use a saucepan with a couple of inches of water in it, then invert the lid and place it on the pan. Add the coconut oil to the inverted lid and heat it until it melts.
  2. Add 25 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops of clary sage oil to 1 tablespoon jojoba oil and stir. Note: I usually do this part while the coconut oil is melting.
  3. Add the melted coconut oil to the oil mixture and stir.
  4. Let it sit for about 30 minutes to cool.
  5. Blend the mixture with a handheld blender for about 4 minutes. It will be a creamy yellow.
  6. Pour it into the jar and seal the lid. Put it in the refrigerator and it’s ready to use once solidified. Use a spoon to scoop out a dollop for use in moisturizing your skin and hair.

How to Apply this DIY Lotion

To apply this simply scoop out a chunk using silverware (spoon or knife) or even a plastic knife, and rub the dollop of hard lotion between your hands to melt it. Apply directly to hair to smooth frizzy wild strands and scrunch if rejuvenating curls. Run hands over hair smoothing for straight hair, working it into the hair. Enjoy great shine and control the natural way. I especially love to do this when I wake up and don’t wash my hair immediately, but need something to calm and smooth my hair until I shower later in the day.

The same application procedure works for skin. You can rub a chunk on your skin also, but sometimes the chunk slips out of your hand and you drop it. This is why I prefer to rub it between my hands first to melt it before applying it to skin and hair.

Note: Make sure you allow time for it to soak in as your skin will be a bit oily at first.

It does soak in quickly but will appear oily at first.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated so they must be added to a carrier oil to be diluted for use. The jojoba oil acts as the carrier oil in this recipe as the essential oils are added to it. Clary sage essential oil is known to be somewhat of a hormonal imbalance helper plus it’s great for insomnia. Lavender essential oil is also good for insomnia so this is a great lotion to use before bed to potentially help with sleep. Lavender essential oil is also good as a relaxant so again it works great at bedtime. Smooth it on yourself and relax, a great self-care activity.

Lavender essential oil is known for other properties too such as being an antiseptic, acting as an anti-fungal, as an anti-inflammatory agent, and for use with acne. Personally, I just love the smell of it so all that other stuff is just a bonus.
