I’ve created a dog treat recipe my dogs absolutely love. These homemade dog treats with rolled oats are something your dogs will love to chow down on too. My dogs are in love with these scrumptious nuggets. They totally love them and beg for them. The recipe is very simple as it only uses baby food, cheese (optional), and rolled oats.

I made these dog treats and immediately after tasting them, my dogs started to beg for more. The first time I made them, my younger dog even sat by the fridge and waited for another one after I had put the container in the fridge. She ate three in a row and wanted more! I didn’t want to upset her stomach with too many oats so I stopped there, but both of my dogs were clamoring for these treats.

The Ingredients Needed for Homemade Dog Treats with Rolled Oats

This recipe is so easy to mix up and make. It takes mere minutes to prep. I love how simple and quick it is to make something healthy that my dogs also love to eat. They enjoy this recipe so very much and I love to give it to them.

The seven ingredients needed are:

  • 2 cups rolled oats, unflavored, this is the old-fashioned oatmeal, not the instant
  • 1 four-ounce jar of carrot baby food
  • One 4 ounce container of squash baby food
  • 1 container apple baby food 4 oz.
  • 2 two jars of chicken baby food 2.5 ounces
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

When choosing the baby food, ensure you choose baby food that is composed of only the vegetable/fruit and water. The same thing with the chicken, but the one I used also had corn starch which is fine for dogs to have anyway. There are many things dogs should not eat including salt, butter, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol, or other artificial sweeteners. There are others, but this names a few foods they can’t have. For more information on what dogs can eat, check out human foods dogs can eat.

Also, check out this excellent source of information for what dogs can and can’t eat written by a veterinarian: https://fluentwoof.com/foods-dogs-cant-eat/

Don’t use the instant oatmeal per the AKC website because it isn’t healthy for dogs. They shouldn’t have any added sugar or other components, just plain old-fashioned oats.

Most dogs can eat cheese but dogs can be lactose intolerant so I put cheese as an optional ingredient. My dogs love cheese so I always add it in. My dogs eat a bit of cheese every day, in moderation, so I know cheese works for them.

Instructions for how to make these Homemade Dog Treats with Rolled Oats

Pour the oats into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine all the baby food and stir well. Pour the baby food mixture over the oats and stir well. Lastly, add in the cheese and stir.

Next, on a nonstick cookie sheet, drop the uncooked treats mixture on the cookie sheet with a spoon. You can adjust the size based on the size of your dog but I made twenty treats.

Bake the treats at 400 degrees for about 18 minutes until golden on the bottom. Let them cool and use a spatula to remove from the pan. Place them in a container with a lid and store them in the fridge.

My dogs love these treats fresh, but also love them cool when stored in the fridge.

Baking for Dogs

It’s so fun to bake a special treat for your dogs. What a great thing to be able to spoil them with an all-natural preservative-free treat made by yourself! Kids can help make them too;) It’s healthier for the dogs and super delicious … my dogs can verify that! My dogs love these treats so much they sit and wait for one while I use the spatula to remove them from the cookie sheet. It’s quite adorable, just like kids waiting for a fresh-baked cookie.

I hope your dogs love these homemade dog treats with rolled oats as much as mine do.

Frida is a sweet girl. She is a rescue dog who was born in a shelter in Mexico. Frida rode in an airplane at three months old to come live in the United States. She lived in a foster home for about a month before we adopted her. Her nickname is Moose because once we got her and fed her puppy food she doubled in size from fifteen pounds to thirty pounds, so since she doubled in one month we called her moose. The nickname has stuck for her. She is now seven years old, almost eight.
