It’s totally true! I gave up using lotion and my skin not only feels better, but it also looks better. It’s also less dry, and the skin on my hands doesn’t crack during the winter months anymore. Want to know what I use instead? I use natural oils and my skin has never felt better! I got into using oils because I joined a subscription service for essential oils. It was great fun because I received recipes and oils every month. The main benefit I received through this though was my introduction to natural oils, and it has changed my skin for the better in more ways than one.

My hands are finally comfortable in my skin, even in the winter.
I love using natural oils for my skin year-round. But I’ve noticed the greatest difference in the skin on my hands during winter. This winter in Minnesota we’ve had our usual below zero temperatures. Usually, by this time of year, my skin is tight, dry, and uncomfortable. The skin on my hands even cracks resulting in little breaks in my skin, and then I’m in pain. Using lotion has historically only helped me out a little with this skin problem. But ever since I started using natural oils, my skin problems have been solved. And I’ve never been so happy with my skin!
I use three different kinds of natural oils: hemp seed oil, rosehip seed oil, and jojoba oil. They all are wonderful oils that benefit my skin in so many ways that I’ll never go back to using just lotion. The natural oils moisturize so well and my skin retains the moisture much better than with lotion. My skin is more pliant, less brittle and fragile feeling, flexible, supple, and just downright more comfortable! I’m finally comfortable in my own skin!
Here’s some of the natural oils I love to use on a daily basis: affiliate links to my favorites on Amazon:
The rosehip seed oil also has anti-aging properties. I love how nicely and quickly the hemp seed oil soaks into my skin.
The jojoba oil also comes in a smaller bottle, but I love the convenience of the hand pump on the larger bottle. With the hand pump, I can easily use the oil just as I’d use lotion. If you want the oil to be scented, you can simply add essential oils. I’ve done this many times with fabulous success.
Even on my face! YUP!
I know I would have never tried natural oils on my skin without having been prompted to do so, especially on my face. The reason for this is because my facial skin tends to be very oily. As an almost fifty-year-old woman, I now love my oily face because it has helped ward off many wrinkles for me. But honestly, still today I would have never thought I should add oil to my face. That was cray-crazy talk! The skin on my face gets shiny in a very short amount of time because my skin makes a lot of oil. So never ever in a million years would I have thought to add oil to my skin. But I’ve found it’s extremely valuable, beneficial, and doesn’t clot my pores … as long as I use the right oils.
When I first started, I used coconut oil. I loved using it, but the skin on my face was breaking out. I researched online and found that sometimes coconut oil can be pore-clogging for some people. This was something I was definitely going to try changing in my routine. I hated the breakouts even more at my age. Acne is somehow worse when you are fighting wrinkles at the same time. So, I stopped using it on my face and hair and my skin stopped breaking out. Now my skin does not break out with the use of hemp seed oil, rosehip seed oil, and jojoba oil.
But… you might wonder how I add makeup over oil-saturated skin…
It’s quite simple. I add a bit of facial powder, white in color before I apply my foundation. This helps the makeup adhere better to my skin and makes it look nicer as well not covering over shiny skin. Then I add my foundation and another layer of appropriately skin color-matched powder for a nice finisher. I use e.l.f. facial powder. As a result of this routine, my skin looks so creamy, supple, and wonderful. And it really feels great!
My facial skin looks more supple and is less dry and tight, and therefore appears more like young skin. My skin is just healthier. Period. It feels just awesome and so I’m totally sold on using the natural oils. I’ll never stop using them.
I’ve focused on how it makes my skin look better, but honestly, the feel of it is the most wonderful!
My skin just feels so soft, so luxurious, so pampered after I’ve applied the natural oils. I love to coat my entire body in one of these oils after a bath or shower about three times a week. It just makes me feel so dang good! I feel wrapped in moisture, hugged by oil, and my skin just feels amazing! It’s such a treat to rub it all over my skin. I will say the hemp seed oil and jojoba oil soak in a bit better than the rosehip oil. So when I use the rosehip seed oil, I rub it in longer. I often reserve the rosehip oil for my face. But I also love the rosehip seed oil because of its anti-aging aspects.
All of these oils are really very healthy for your skin;) Using other manufactured lotions you get all kinds of chemicals that aren’t in the natural oils too so this makes them healthier as well. I often buy the organic natural oils as well to make them even more pure and healthy. You can also use them to make your own lotion as well by adding solid coconut oil and beeswax with the natural oils. Here’s one I created: Homemade Face Cream with Frankincense Oil
And don’t forget your hair!
Not only do I use hemp seed oil and jojoba oil on my skin, but I also use them on my hair. Hemp seed oil is my favorite one to use on my hair. I add it to my hair after I’ve washed it and I scrunch my hands, which helps my natural curls to form and hold. It’s also great to rub into your scalp. My hair feels and looks great! Just be careful because too much oil or your hair will just look oily. Experiment with you hair to see what works best. I often use about a quarter size amount in the palm of my hand. Then I smooth it into my hair and squeeze my hair to help the curls to manifest.
I also love to run a splash of oil through my hair if it gets frizzy or unruly looking because this calms it down. It’s also a great fix to scrunch some natural oils into my hair in the morning to tame it if I’m not washing it right away in the morning. It just gives my curls more definition and calms my frizz. It’s like magic!
I hope you have found this post helpful for incorporating into your own beauty regime!
