This is such a delicious recipe! I had so much fun developing it, and even more fun enjoying it! This post was sponsored by Selefina mulling spice mix
Mulled wine has been around for centurhttps://www.selefina.com/mulling-spice-mix.htmlies and there’s really no one recipe for mulling spices. Mixes can vary so it’s fun to try different ones. Basically, mulled wine is warm wine spiced with herbs, spices, and often fruit. It’s quite common in the fall and winter seasons, especially as a holiday beverage around Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s a great treat! The fruit serves as a delicious garnish and the wine can also be cooked/warmed with some fruit in it for even more flavoring.
In the fall and winter, especially in cold climates like mine here in Minnesota, warm beverages are a special treat. And often a necessity to stay warm! A flavored warm wine is an indulgent and festive way to relax and enjoy time together with family and friends.
I loved using the prepared package of mulling spice mix from Selefina. It had an amazing aroma, appearance, and taste. I loved even the look of the mix as it was cooking with the wine in the crockpot. It delivered so much seasonal joy! All the earthy colors mixed with the deep red wine and brilliant orange oranges got me all excited to try this wine! It was totally wonderful and the addition of the apples made it simply divine!

Ingredients to Make Crockpot Mulled Wine with Apples
Here are the ingredients needed to make this warm cocktail recipe:
- 1 bottle of dry red wine (750 ml), Cabernet Sauvignon is the kind of wine I used
- 1 package of mulling spice mix blend from Selefina, mulled wine mix
- 1 clementine
- 1 cup pomegranate blueberry juice
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 teaspoons hibiscus flower petals from Selefina
- 1/4 cup tequila
- 1 Honeycrisp apple
You will also need a sheet of fine mesh cheesecloth, a small crockpot, a large bowl, a knife, a cutting board, and a strainer.
Instructions for how to make the Mulled Wine
This is a very easy recipe. Here’s the short version. Just mix it up and let it cook. Then strain it and serve it with apple slices for the garnish.
How to make it:
- Pour the bottle of wine into the crockpot.
- Add the mulling spice mix, blend.
- Add 1 clementine, sliced.
- Next, add 1 cup of pomegranate blueberry juice.
- Add 2 tablespoons of honey.
- Add 2 teaspoons of dried Hibiscus flower petals from Selefina.
- Last, add 1/4 cup of tequila.
- Let this combination cook in the crockpot on high for an hour and a half.
- Line the strainer with the fine mesh cheesecloth. Make sure you are generous with the cheesecloth because once you pour it, the liquid can pull down the cheesecloth on the sides and the spice mix may get through if you don’t have enough in place. Put the strainer in a large bowl to catch the wine. You want to fully strain out all the spices and petals so they aren’t in the mulled wine.
- Next, pour the strained wine back into the crockpot and turn down the crockpot to low or keep warm. Add apple slices as a garnish to each cup and serve. Enjoy!
Crockpot Mulled Wine with Apples
Ingredients
- 1 750 ml Bottle of dry red wine, Cabernet Sauvignon
- 1 mulling spice mix, blend
- 1 clementine orange, sliced
- 1 cup pomegranate blueberry juice
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tsp hibiscus flower petals
- 1/4 cup tequila
- 1 Honeycrisp apple, sliced
Instructions
- Combine the red wine, package of mulling spice mix, clementine orange slices, pomegranate blueberry juice, honey, dried hibiscus flower petals, and tequila in a small crockpot.
- Cook the mixture on high in the crockpot for 1 1/2 hours.
- Line a strainer generously with the cheesecloth and place it inside a large bowl. Ensure to cover the strainer up to the sides so that when you pour the mulled wine into the cheesecloth it doesn't pull down the sides and allow the spices to fall through. Pour the cooked wine mixture through the cheesecloth and the strainer so it falls through into the large bowl beneath to strain it.
- Pour the mulled wine back into the crockpot and put it on low or keep warm. Serve in glass mugs with slices of Honeycrisp apples as the garnish.
Other Ideas for this Recipe:
Want some other ideas for this recipe? Try out different garnishes such as lemons, blueberries, cucumbers, berries, or a string cheese/cheddar cheese stick. The apples in this mulled wine are to die for though. They are simply delicious! I couldn’t get enough of them! I used the Honeycrisp apple which was developed in my home state of Minnesota at the University of Minnesota. It’s the best apple ever!
Other ideas include adding different fruits to the mulled wine as it’s cooking to add in different flavors or add other types of alcohol other than tequila, such as rum, vodka, or even white wine. The flavored vodkas might also be fun to try out to see what other scrumptious combos you can come up with.
Let me know what you try! I’d love to hear!

There are many appetizers that pair well with mulled wine including cheese by itself such as a cheese stick, cheese and crackers, cold meats, bread, and a fruit tray.
