We recently went on a trip to the Gulf of Mexico and on our drive we stopped at a hotel that had a self-serve Breakfast Oatmeal Bar. It was so cool, all five of us loved it. Each bowl of oatmeal can be highly individualized per a person’s tastes because it’s composed of a bunch of different toppings. It’s like a salad bar for oatmeal.

The hotel served breakfast included with the room (I love that), and one of the dishes they served was steel-cut oatmeal with a wide variety of toppings on the side. They had a big pot of steel-cut oatmeal and a bunch of little bowls filled with various toppings. My whole family fell in love with it and when we can back through on our way home, we indulged in this yummy self-serve oatmeal bar again.
What’s Steel Cut Oatmeal?
While we were eating, my family was discussing what the difference was between regular oatmeal and steel-cut. We had no idea, LOL. But another hotel guest overheard us and she informed us that steel-cut oatmeal meant it’s more healthy and less processed. We were all in for it even more at that point. So, I recently replicated that whole Breakfast Oatmeal Bar for a recent brunch at-home meal. Scroll on to find out more.
At-Home Meal Idea for a Group
This breakfast oatmeal bar idea works great for a group. Everyone gets to customize the toppings based on their own tastes for their bowl of oatmeal. Either when making a whole big pot of oatmeal, or making it from packets, this is a simple, delicious, healthy easy meal that works great for a family or when having guests over for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. It’s all-natural (based on your choice of toppings).
When having house guests stay at your home, this is a perfect meal. It’s easy, fun, and oh so very customizable. The ideas for toppings are endless. You could even set it up the night before for easy meal prep in the morning. Simply cut up the fruit and cover each bowl, pour the nuts into bowls, brown sugar, and any other toppings and cover. Then simply pull it out when ready to serve your self-serve breakfast bar.
Toppings for Steel Cut Breakfast Oatmeal Bar
Any toppings could be used but here are the toppings I used for this Breakfast Oatmeal bar:
- 1/2 c. fresh mango, diced
- 1/2 c. fresh blueberries
- 1/2 c. fresh blackberries, cut in half
- 1 banana, diced
- 1/2 c. fresh strawberries, diced
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 c. walnut pieces
- 1/2 c. sunflower seeds
- 1/2 c. golden raisins
- 1/2 c. honey
- 6 packets of steel cut oatmeal
I simply diced all the fruit and added the other ingredients to bowls, then made a bowl of oatmeal for each member of my family from packets, then we each topped our oatmeal with our chosen toppings. Easy peasy, yummy, and filling.
