An Unplanned Lesson in Giving to a Homeless Man

December 30, 2016

Winter Scene of trees with snow falling

An Unplanned Lesson in Giving An unplanned lesson in giving to a homeless man unfolded before my son and I one Sunday this holiday season. As we drove out of a parking lot we approached an old man standing on the mini sidewalk island between the in and the out of the parking lot. We had just bought a present for my son’s friend and next we were heading to the birthday party. There stood a man. He stood in a spot I hadn’t seen someone stand before even though I’d been to this store many ... Continue Reading...

Gift Ideas for a Younger Teen Boy

December 5, 2016

A gift for a younger teen boy. Gift ideas for the hard to buy for young teen boys.

Gift ideas for a younger teen boy can be a challenge to come up with when shopping. Gone are the days where their wish lists fill up the front and back side of a piece of paper. Young teens are hard to buy gifts for because they have outgrown playing with most toys but they still like to open fun presents. Money or gift cards are exciting to spend at the store but opening an actual gift gives instant fun for them at Christmas or on their birthday. Kids who are new to the teenage years may still ... This Boy Mom Reports: Crafts Gone Horribly Wrong

September 22, 2016

craft supplies boys

Boy Mom Reports Crafts Gone Horribly Wrong One of my three sons is infatuated with crafts. Boy crafts I mean. Not simple coloring, cutting, or gluing but deeply involved mini man crafts made with tools. I admit he is quite creative with his inventions. Though it’s a tough pill to swallow when his boy mind disregards what this girl mom thinks is OK when making these crafts. We clearly don’t see eye to eye. Some crafts have gone horribly wrong. This Boy Mom Reports: The making of ... Continue Reading...

Five Ways to Teach Kindness to Kids

July 28, 2016

Kindness as a way of life is something I want to teach my three kids. The three of them fight; I mean they fight a lot. Of course they fight, they are siblings. But I also see kindness woven in between the fights like threads of shining hope that one day they will be kind adults. They are knit together as siblings like a mat of ever-changing interactions and some days I'm frustrated by more angry threads than kind threads. I let the kind threads shine through by highlighting them and ... Continue Reading...

When Another Kid Is A Poor Sport And It Hurts My Kid

July 25, 2016

Football Helmet

For The Love of Football My son loves football. The season is almost upon us again and those fears of what other kids will do to him rattles my nerves already. I’m afraid of what the kids who are poor sports will do to him. He has been the victim of unsportsmanlike behavior that has enraged this mama bear to the edge. It has taken all my restraint to not go ballistic. Kids get riled up and they might go too far, and I get that. But when it’s a blatant act of intent to do harm, my blood ... Continue Reading...

Breastfeeding Taught Me To Love Being Trapped In Parenting Obligations

July 19, 2016

My boys are older now and I drive them to so many activities that breastfeeding them is just a memory. I can easily conjure up those feelings of breastfeeding closeness because the joy of it was so full and complete. Breastfeeding was a bonding experience I remember with joy even though I often felt trapped by it. Reflecting on my time spent breastfeeding has taught me to love each moment of being trapped in parenting obligations for every stage as my kids grow. This post contains affiliate ... My Labor with a Midwife and a Physician

July 7, 2016

My three birthing experiences were completely different. With my first son labor was natural with a midwife who performed hypnosis on me (which worked to reduce my pain for a good portion of the labor), and a bit of Pitocin to finish dilation. My third son’s birth was a planned C-section and interestingly the quickest and easiest recovery. My middle son’s birth had all possible labor scenarios: overdue induction, natural labor with a midwife, dysfunctional labor progression with ... Continue Reading...

Celebrating the Somersault-Boys of Summer

June 12, 2016

My feet sink into the garden muck. The rain has been coming and coming this summer. The humid Minnesota afternoon sun beats down on me, true to the eighty degrees the thermometer red line shows. I look over the short white garden fence and Matt and Ben are playing over at the play set in the other corner of the yard while I conquer the weeds in my swampy garden. I can only wrench them out if using all my back muscles, their roots clenched into the dirt like strong green and brown wire hands. I ... Continue Reading...
